Tucked at the base of Lookout Mountain, St. Elmo is one of the most in-demand neighborhoods in Chattanooga. Known for its quaint and historic homes, this community enjoys convenient access to everything the city has to offer.

St. Elmo’s name was taken from a novel penned by Augusta J. Evans Wilson. After spending several summers on Lookout Mountain, the author compared her view to that of St. Elmo Castle in Naples, Italy. Her best-selling book –
St. Elmo – was published in 1866.


St. Elmo, one of Chattanooga’s four Local Historic Districts, charms residents with a variety of styles and aesthetics. With everything from Victorian-era residences to craftsman-style homes, St. Elmo offers both renovated and antique houses. The area has also seen some new construction in recent years, which provides residents with even more options.




St. Elmo is home to Sanofi, which manufactures well-known medicine and wellness brands, as well as a plethora of smaller businesses. The neighborhood also provides easy access to I-24 and top employers at Enterprise South Industrial Park and throughout downtown Chattanooga.




With major interstates and downtown Chattanooga just minutes away, St. Elmo is an ideal place to live. Cities such as Knoxville, Atlanta, Nashville, and Birmingham are easily accessible, and the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport is a quick drive away. In addition, the Tennessee Riverwalk extends to St. Elmo, offering bikers, joggers, and other outdoor enthusiasts an easy way to get downtown.




Students residing in St. Elmo are either zoned for Lookout Valley Elementary, Orchard Knob Elementary, Lookout Valley Middle/High School, Orchard Knob Middle School, or The Howard School. Calvin Donaldson Environmental Science Academy and East Lake Academy of Fine Arts are two magnet schools in the area. The outskirts of St. Elmo are also home to Chattanooga Christian School, and other private schools are a short drive away.




St. Elmo residents have easy access to large health care facilities operated by CHI Memorial, Erlanger Health System, and Parkridge Health System.
