Erlanger Health System, CHI Memorial, Parkridge Medical Center, and Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation all made the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce’s Major Employers List in 2019. These systems collectively employee approximately 12,000 individuals full-time.

Four large health care systems – CHI Memorial, Erlanger, Parkridge, and Tennova Healthcare – dot the Chattanooga landscape and provide high-quality care to patients. These organizations offer multiple locations and are complemented by two rehabilitation hospitals, Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation and Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Chattanooga. Kindred Hospital, a transitional care hospital, is also located in Chattanooga, while Hamilton Health Care System serves the Dalton area.

Founded in 1952, CHI Memorial is a nonprofit faith-based, multi-hospital system that provides preventative, primary, and acute hospital care. The CHI Memorial network boasts eight facilities and offers treatments for various types of cancer and is supported by advanced technologies. The Rees Skillern Cancer Institute at CHI Memorial is a leading provider of cancer services in the Chattanooga area and features robotic-assisted, minimally invasive treatment for prostate, gynecologic, head and neck, colorectal, and lung cancers. At CHI Memorial’s Guerry Heart and Vascular Center, a team of experienced surgeons, cardiologists, and support staff addresses heart concerns, and The Chattanooga Heart Institute, which is integrated with the Guerry Heart and Vascular Center, has led the region’s largest center dedicated solely to cardiovascular care for the past 40 years. CHI Memorial also offers patients access to advanced imaging services and the Orthopedic Center, which includes a joint replacement center, spine center, and sports medicine and rehabilitation services. CHI Memorial was named the No. 2 hospital in Tennessee by U.S. News & World Report for the 2018-2019 ranking.

With seven hospitals in the Tennessee and North Carolina area, Erlanger Health System treats more than 600,000 patients each year. Erlanger is the tri-state region’s only Level I trauma hospital, and the organization has a fleet of six LIFE FORCE air ambulances to provide optimal emergency care. Children’s Hospital at Erlanger is the region’s only Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and the facility also boasts a pediatric trauma team, emergency center, and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The Erlanger Southeast Regional Stroke Center, with its state-of-the-art infrastructure, staff, and training, has set a gold standard for comprehensive stroke care and is among the largest stroke centers in the nation.

Erlanger is also home to the only kidney transplant program in the region and has been recognized nationally for its nephrology services. The organization provides mental health services at the Erlanger Behavioral Health Hospital, which treats an array of disorders and addictions for a variety of ages. It also serves as a teaching hospital in the region and teams up with the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga and University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis.

Parkridge Health System offers comprehensive care with its four hospitals placed throughout the area. Located in downtown Chattanooga, Parkridge Medical Center offers emergency, cardiology, orthopedics, robotics, and surgical services and recently opened the Advanced Wound Care & Vascular Center. The facility also offers oncology services at the Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute. Parkridge East Hospital offers comprehensive medical services and features a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, while Parkridge Valley offers behavioral health and addictive disorder treatment services for all ages. Parkridge West Hospital also provides a full suite of care with emergency medical services, an outpatient laboratory, outpatient imaging, outpatient physical therapy, and inpatient behavioral health services.

With nine hospitals and a network of freestanding emergency departments, rehabilitation centers, surgery centers, and other medical clinics, Tennova Healthcare is one of the state’s largest health care networks. Tennova Healthcare – Cleveland’s campus offers inpatient and outpatient care, diagnostic services, medical and surgical care, and 24-hour emergency care. Tennova Healthcare – Cleveland also offers an accredited Chest Pain Center recognized by the Society of Chest Pain Centers and an accredited Sleep Disorders Center recognized by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Located in downtown Chattanooga, Kindred Hospital is a transitional care facility that provides both long-term and acute care. The facility specializes in caring for patients who need extended hospital care. Services include IV antibiotic therapy, pulmonary care, wound care, diabetes management, palliative care, post-intensive care, rehabilitation services, organ transplant care, and stroke and brain injury care, among others.

Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation is Tennessee’s largest acute rehabilitation hospital and is a nonprofit. With a variety of inpatient and outpatient services, Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation was the first rehabilitation hospital in the nation to earn accreditation from both The Joint Commission and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. The facility’s inpatient programs consist of treatments for brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke, amputation, and major multiple trauma, as well as other disorders and illnesses. In addition, the hospital has a SubAcute Rehabilitation Program, which received a 2019 Bronze AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award. Outpatient services include occupational therapy, aquatic therapy, speech-language therapy, and cognitive rehabilitation, just to name a few.

Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Chattanooga serves patients from the Chattanooga area and is noted for its stroke, hip fracture, and amputee rehabilitation services. The hospital provides treatment for conditions such as arthritis and Parkinson’s disease, as well as provides care for brain injury, spinal cord injury, traumatic injury, strokes, and neurological disorders. Additional services are offered, and Encompass Health houses the Amputee Support Group, Aphasia Support Group, Parkinson’s Disease Support Group, and Scenic City Stroke and Neuro Support Group.

In nearby Dalton, Georgia, nonprofit Hamilton Health Care System offers major medical, surgical, and diagnostic services. The Hamilton Regional Cancer Institute opened the Peeples Cancer Institute at Hamilton in late 2019, and the Anna Shaw Children’s Institute is a regional leader in assisting children with developmental delays. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations awarded Hamilton Medical Center with a Disease-Specific Care Certification for its primary stroke center, and the hospital also has accredited chest pain and sleep centers.

Affiliated with CommonSpirit Health, CHI Memorial has been serving Chattanooga residents since 1952 and is the region’s only faith-based health care system. The health care system is a regional referral center of choice with 4,741 associates and more than 600 affiliated physicians providing health care throughout Southeast Tennessee and North Georgia. CHI Memorial operates a 349-bed main campus in Chattanooga, along with the 74-bed CHI Memorial Hospital Hixson and the 36-bed CHI Memorial Hospital Georgia, while further serving the community through Health at Home services, a Community Health Center, Ooltewah Imaging Center, CHI Memorial Parkway, CHI Memorial Physical Therapy at Hamilton Family YMCA, and YMCA Healthy Living Center at North River. The health system provides services in cardiac, orthopedics, urology, diabetes and nutrition, wound healing, sleep disorders, and numerous other specialties. Among the specialized providers within CHI Memorial are the Guerry Heart and Vascular Center, MaryEllen Locher Breast Center, Rees Skillern Cancer Institute, Joseph and Virginia Schmissrauter Centers for Cancer Support, and Buz Standefer Lung Center. CHI Memorial offers a network of employed primary care and specialty physicians in 46 locations across Tennessee and North Georgia, as well as urgent care centers.

The Chattanooga Heart Institute at CHI Memorial was founded in 1977 and partnered with CHI Memorial in 2011 to offer broader access to a network of state-of-the-art resources. The Chattanooga Heart Institute at CHI Memorial has offices in Chattanooga, East Brainerd, Hixson, Cleveland, and Jasper, Tennessee, and in Ringgold, Georgia. Its 27 board-certified cardiologists and three cardiovascular surgeons specialize in interventional cardiology, peripheral vascular disease, cardiovascular imaging, electrophysiology, and general cardiology. The cardiologists oversee PET, CT, MRI, electrocardiogram (EKG), echocardiogram, imaging stress tests, carotid and abdominal ultrasound, and noninvasive nuclear cardiology.

As a leading provider of acute inpatient rehabilitation, Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Chattanooga, formerly known as HealthSouth Chattanooga, combines compassionate care with the latest technology in the treatment of medically complex patients. Encompass Health is the largest provider of inpatient rehabilitation services in the country. Encompass Health of Chattanooga has been consistently ranked above the national averages in patient outcomes and quality indicators. In 2018, the hospital placed in the top 12% of all rehabilitation hospitals in the nation for its quality outcomes. This acute inpatient rehabilitation hospital offers highly trained physical, occupational, and speech therapists, a greater nurse-to-patient ratio that includes Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurses (CRRNs), and board-certified rehabilitation physicians. In addition, the rehabilitation team includes respiratory therapists, registered dieticians, case managers, wound care specialists, on-site dialysis nurses, and consultative physicians. The result is a shorter length of stay with functional and cognitive gains that are consistently better than the national average. Encompass Health’s rehabilitation technology includes the Auto-Ambulator to help patients regain the ability to walk and Experia to help patients regain the ability to swallow, both of which are exclusive to Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Chattanooga. Encompass Health treats people who have had a functional or cognitive decline due to illness or injury, and it accepts patients ages 14 years and older. Encompass Health of Chattanooga has earned The Joint Commission Disease Specific Certification for Stroke, Hip Fracture, and Amputee Rehabilitation. Children’s Hospital at Erlanger

As the only medical center in the Chattanooga and tri-state region devoted solely to children, Children’s Hospital at Erlanger is a Comprehensive Regional Pediatric Center, the highest designation in the state for pediatrics. The hospital offers a full range of pediatric care as well as a pediatric ER, ICU, and Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, providing the highest level of care in the region for premature and sick infants. In December 2018, the hospital opened the 90,000-square-foot Kennedy Outpatient Center, which houses more than 50 pediatric specialists associated with Children’s Hospital at Erlanger. These specialists include cardiologists, gastroenterologists, pulmonologists, neurologists, and orthopedists, who serve more than 100,000 patients annually with outpatient services. The center is phase one of a plan to build a new children’s inpatient hospital.



Erlanger Health System

In addition to serving as the region’s only Level I Trauma Center, Erlanger Health System has seven hospitals and seven emergency centers in Tennessee and North Carolina. It is also Chattanooga’s largest employer. Erlanger’s Chattanooga area locations include: Baroness Hospital, Children’s Hospital, and Behavioral Health Hospital in downtown Chattanooga; Erlanger East on Gunbarrel Road; Erlanger North in Red Bank; three community health centers; and Erlanger at Volkswagen Drive. Erlanger is also the region’s only academic teaching center through its affiliation with the UT College of Medicine at Chattanooga. Children’s Hospital at Erlanger is the only pediatric specialty hospital in the region. With 974 licensed beds, Erlanger also maintains LIFE FORCE, a fleet of six air ambulances based in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia. The Erlanger Regional Operations Center (EROC) coordinates ambulance and emergency air traffic across 11 Tennessee counties and three Georgia counties and has been instrumental in improved outcomes. The health system also operates numerous physician practices throughout the region, ranging from family medicine to specialized services. Erlanger is recognized internationally for its Southeast Regional Stroke Center and the role it plays in clinical trials, technology innovations, and stroke treatment. Erlanger has the highest volume of stroke patients in Tennessee and also offers the region’s only kidney transplant program. Erlanger has expanded its robotic surgery services with the installation of six da Vinci® robots and added a pediatric CT scanner, as well as a bi-plane cath lab to diagnose adult and pediatric cardiac conditions.

Hamilton Health Care System (HHCS) is a nonprofit health system serving the Northwest Georgia region. Located in Dalton, Hamilton Medical Center (flagship affiliate) is a 282-bed regional acute care hospital offering major medical, surgical, and diagnostic services, including an accredited stroke and chest pain center.
