2018 // Family Fun

Did You Know?

The Songbirds Guitar Museum opened in March 2017, and it has already claimed a spot on Fodor’s Travel’s list of the “World’s Best New Museums.” Home to an unparalleled collection of electric and acoustic guitars, this destination is a music lover’s paradise.

From the riverfront to the mountains, to historical sites and iconic attractions, there is never a shortage of places to explore in Chattanooga – especially with the family in tow.

Noted by Travel + Leisure and The Washington Post as a place to visit in 2017, Chattanooga continues to welcome more than 3.5 million visitors each year, offering museums, attractions, and adventures for the whole family.

Consistently listed among the best aquariums in the U.S., the Tennessee Aquarium, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2017, offers a fascinating educational experience for kids and adults alike. The River Journey and Ocean Journey buildings are home to more than 12,000 animals, including penguins, sharks, reptiles, and the largest collection of freshwater turtles in North America. The IMAX 3D Theater at the Tennessee Aquarium boasts the latest in digital laser projection, regularly playing both original and feature films.

Located on Lookout Mountain, Rock City, Ruby Falls, and the Incline Railway are some of Chattanooga’s most visited tourist attractions. Rock City features beautiful gardens and a winding trail leading through ancient rock formations to a stunning panoramic view of seven states. America’s largest commercial underground waterfall, Ruby Falls, is located 1,120 feet below the earth’s surface.  Ruby Falls’ ZIPstream Aerial Adventure thrills visitors with zips lines, suspended obstacle courses, and a climbing tower. In operation since 1895, the Incline Railway take passengers on a ride straight up Lookout Mountain at a 72.2% grade.

Additional attractions found downtown include the historic Chattanooga Choo Choo, where families can spend the night in a Pullman Train Car guestroom.  At the Creative Discovery Museum, hands-on exhibits encourage creativity and learning. High Point Climbing and Fitness Downtown features more than 30,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor climbing and challenges all ages with beginner walls, a Kid Zone, and the High Point Climbing School.

For a journey into the past, the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum offers a variety of trips from Grand Junction Station on vintage train cars.  Chattanooga Ducks invites guests to ride around downtown on an authentic WWII amphibious landing craft and then splash into the Tennessee River for a historic ecological tour. The beauty of the Tennessee River and surrounding mountains are enjoyed on a Southern Belle sightseeing cruise, one of Chattanooga’s oldest and most popular attractions. With over 300 acres to explore, the Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center offers more of Chattanooga’s natural beauty.

At the Chattanooga Zoo, locals and tourists can stroll through the Himalayan Passage, Gombe Forest, and Corcovado Jungle, where red pandas, meerkats, and even a two-toed sloth are found. Lake Winnepesaukah, a family-favorite amusement park, is open daily in the summer months and on select weekends throughout the year.

With 13 miles of paved trails, picnic areas, and piers, the Tennessee RiverPark offers picturesque views of the river and a safe, lighted area to jog, skate, bike, or walk. Bike rentals are available at several locations along the RiverPark and downtown. For a ride around the city in style, horse drawn carriage tours and the Chattanooga Double Decker can be booked online. A new attraction, the Chattanooga Hop Trolley Tour, buses visitors to 10 unique stops around downtown Chattanooga.

Avid sports fans can follow the UTC Mocs athletic teams, the Chattanooga Lookouts AA minor league baseball team, the semi-professional Chattanooga Football (soccer) Club, and the Nooga Rugby team. Manker Patten, Chattanooga’s premier tennis club, is home to top tennis matches. A number of tennis courts, as well as golf courses, are open to the public.

Chattanooga hosts several of the South’s well-known music festivals, including the eight-day Riverbend Festival; this musical extravaganza draws in 350,000 people and features 100 bands on five stages. The Nightfall Concert Series (Friday evenings, May through August) and Riverfront Nights (Saturday evenings, July and August) are free outdoor concerts that feature musicians of all styles. Station Street, Chattanooga’s newest entertainment hub, is the place to catch a live musical performance, while Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium and the Tivoli Theatre remain iconic entertainment venues.

Seasonal and cultural events are held throughout the year. In the spring, Rock City transforms into Shamrock City to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and also hosts Fairytale Nights, EarthDayz, and the Southern Blooms Festival. The Armed Forces Day parade honors veterans and fallen war heroes each May, closely followed by Independence Day celebrations and fireworks on the river. In the fall, Rock City and the Chattanooga Market celebrate Bavarian culture with German food, beer, music, and more. The Tennessee Aquarium’s Aqua-Scarium and Ruby Falls’ Haunted Caverns are fall favorite activities as well. The winter brings Rock City’s Enchanted Garden of Lights, Ruby Falls Christmas Underground, Tennessee Valley Railroad’s North Pole Limited, and the Chattanooga Zoo’s Holiday Lights, while Ruby Falls’ Romance at Ruby is a Valentine’s tradition for many.

No matter the occasion, a visit to Chattanooga promises to be a memorable experience.
