Did You Know?

Chattanooga’s banking roots go all the way back to pre-Civil War times. The Bank of Chattanooga opened at the corner of Market and Third streets in 1855 and even produced its own currency, including copper and silver coins and dollar bills.

With Chattanooga’s range of national, regional, and local banks, along with credit unions and savings and loan institutions, individuals and businesses alike enjoy a variety of money management options.

Depending on the bank, Chattanoogans can benefit from financial services for their individual, business, and wealth management needs. Standard personal banking services include deposits, loans, mortgages, and investment options. Business services can range from deposits and loans, to cash flow and treasury management, to employee benefits and succession planning. Wealth management services extend to financial planning, pensions, 401k plans, portfolio management, trusts, insurance, and more.

Like many financial institutions, Chattanooga banks are fine-tuning their services to meet the diverse needs of their clients, from millennials who want convenient, mobile banking options to baby boomers who want a personal relationship with their local bank. Banks have adjusted by making more services available on mobile devices and opening new ATMs for customers’ convenience. Institutions have expanded their online presence and digitalized more services, creating a secure and convenient environment for their customers.

Similar to the banking industry across the United States, regional and local banks have pursued various strategies to more efficiently and effectively reach their key target markets with more and better services. Among those have been the expansion of local and regional brands into the Chattanooga area. In 2017, First National Community Bank, which operates offices in North Georgia, and Reliant Bank, based in Brentwood, Tennessee, opened locations in the Chattanooga area market. Separately, local banks, including Millennium Bank, Pinnacle Financial Partners, Southern Heritage Bank, and SmartBank have sought to expand their brands by building or purchasing additional locations. Other key initiatives have included new branding. In 2016, Community Trust & Banking Co. changed its name to Millennium Bank. This year Synovus Financial Corp., which operates banks throughout the Southeast, including Cohutta Banking Company in North Georgia and Chattanooga, announced that it would be renaming all of its 28 locally branded divisions to Synovus.
