Pioneering New Technologies and Innovation
Chattanooga’s energy and communications providers offer the latest options for electric, gas, water, TV, internet, and telephone services. Anchoring these services are Electric Power Board (EPB) with its fiber optic network, Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) – the largest government-owned power provider in the nation, and Tennessee American Water.

In 2010, EPB garnered national attention by becoming the first provider to launch a community-wide fiber optic network capable of delivering up to 1-gig (1,000 megabits per second) internet speeds to every home and business in its 600-square-mile service area. Five years later, the municipally owned utility became the first in the world to make 10-gig internet speeds available to everyone in its network.
Serving Hamilton County and portions of the surrounding counties and Northern Georgia, EPB provides electric power as well as internet, television, and telephone services. EPB has also built one of the world’s most advanced smart grids: an interactive, self-healing system that reroutes power in order to prevent outages. Estimates indicate that Smart Grid has reduced power outages by 60%, saving the Chattanooga community roughly $60 million annually.
EPB consistently receives top marks for customer service and environmental stewardship. In July 2018, for the third year in a row, J.D. Power named EPB the highest rated mid-sized utility in the South for customer service and reliability. That same month, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation and Governor Bill Haslam singled out EPB as a Pursuit of Excellence Winner for the corporation’s leadership in environmental stewardship.
With corporate offices in Chattanooga, the Tennessee Valley Authority serves 9 million people across seven states through the three Es: energy production, economic development, and environmental stewardship. Just a few of TVA’s roles include flood control, navigation, and land management for the Tennessee River system, as well as embracing innovations such as electric transportation, energy storage, and solar technology. TVA customers enjoy electric rates that are lower than 70% of the U.S.
Tennessee American Water is a local, award-winning company providing water services to more than 375,000 customers in Tennessee and Northern Georgia. Committed to delivering clean and affordable water, the company conducts hundreds of water safety tests daily to measure for potential contaminants – ensuring the highest quality product.
Chattanooga’s phone services, including landlines, cable, and internet, are offered by AT&T, EPB, and Comcast. Mobile phone carriers include AT&T, Cricket, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Virgin Mobile.
Among others, gas services are available through Chattanooga Gas, Holston Gases, Amerigas (propane), and Ferrellgas (propane).

Partnering with Atlas Organics in 2018, EPB became the first Chattanooga corporation to divert a significant portion of its waste stream from landfill to commercial composting. This is just one of many efforts by EPB to become a leader in sustainability and waste diversion.
