Chattanooga’s Banks and Financial Institutions Stand Apart

With Chattanooga’s range of local, regional, and national banks, along with credit unions and savings and loan institutions, individuals and businesses alike enjoy a variety of financial services.

Depending on the institution, Chattanoogans can benefit from banking services for their individual, business, and wealth management needs. Standard personal banking services include deposits, loans, mortgages, and investment options. Business services can range from deposits and loans, to cash flow and treasury management, to employee benefits and succession planning. Wealth management services extend to financial planning, pensions, 401k plans, portfolio management, trusts, insurance, and more.

The Chattanooga banking landscape offers a variety of institutions, from long-established local and regional banks to marketplace newcomers. Among the 28 banks in Chattanooga, recognizable institutions that have served the area for decades include, among others, First Tennessee, SunTrust, First Volunteer, Regions, and Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union. They’ve been joined in the last decade by new names and new banks created by acquisitions and mergers, re-branding campaigns, regional startups, and recent entries to the market. These include, among others, FirstBank (formerly Northwest Georgia Bank), Synovus (formerly Cohutta Bank Co.), SmartBank (previously Cornerstone Community Bank and Southern Community Bank), Pinnacle Financial Partners (formerly CapitalMark Bank & Trust), Millennium Bank (formerly Community Trust & Banking Co.), Atlantic Capital Bank (formerly FSG), Southeast Bank (headquartered in Knoxville), Reliant Bank (headquartered near Nashville), and more.

Similar to the banking industry across the United States, Chattanooga institutions are pursuing various strategies to effectively reach their key target markets with more and better services. Among these has been the expansion of physical locations. FirstBank recently announced the purchase of the Atlantic Capital operations in Chattanooga, Dalton, and Knoxville – 14 locations in total. Banks such as Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union, Millennium Bank, Southern Heritage Bank, and SmartBank have sought to expand their brands by building or purchasing additional locations. Additionally, all are fine-tuning their services to meet the diverse needs of their clients, from millennials who want convenient, mobile banking options to baby boomers who want a personal relationship with their local bank. Institutions continue to expand their online presence and digitize more services, creating a secure and convenient environment for their customers. Several banks are opening their doors on Saturdays, lengthening their drive-through hours to accommodate clients’ schedules, or offering remote tellers on their ATMs.
